Almora,once the capital of Kumaon’s Chand Dynasty in the mid-16th century,is home to Kumaon’s most important temples,and is thronged by visitors for its famous Dusshera celebrations and the Nanda Devi Mela.It also boasts some excellent holiday resorts in its forested outskirts,all strategically located to allow the visitor to enjoy Almora’s biggest attraction,a magnificent view of the Indian Himalayas.

It is said that Vivekananda stopped by during his Himalayan sojourn and gave some famous discourses,Uday Shankar and his troupe including Zohra Sehgal and a very young Guru Dutt came here for a performance,Jawaharlal Nehru served a sentence in Almora jail.

The best way of reaching Almora is going to Kathgodam via NH 24 and NH87 and then take a right turn from Ranibagh and follow the road till Bhimtal and then proceed to Bhowali and then Khairna and finally to Almora via Sualbari.

Tourist attractions in Almora

One can visit Bright end corner which is 2.5 kms outside Almora on the road back to Sualbari,is the place to view dramatic sunsets and the Himalayan peaks.Another famous site is Kasar Devi Temple situated at a height of 5741 feet above sea level,this temple is mentioned in the second chapter of Skanda Purana and developed as a pilgrimage site,Swami Vivekananda is said to come here to mediate in the year 1820.Apart from this there is Rock shelter of Lakhudiar and Gollu Devta temple.
